The Kasserine Pass

February 19–20, 1943

BACKGROUND TO BATTLE

For the Americans the shock of defeat at Sidi Bou Zid caused Lieutenant-General Anderson to pull back from Gafsa in the face of anticipated German pressure, II Corps in effect drawing in its horns to what it assumed were more easily defensible central positions. Rommel’s complement to Operation Frühlingswind, Operation Morgenluft, became redundant, with the focus of future maneuvers centered on exploiting the success German armor had already enjoyed at Sidi Bou Zid. Even so, the officer in command of 10. Panzer-Division and 21. Panzer-Division, Generalleutnant Heinz Ziegler, had moved cautiously in the wake of his victory despite his four Kampfgruppen having annihilated two American tank battalions and the best part of the 168th Infantry Regiment in relatively short order. He had inched forward with a timidity that infuriated Rommel but which met with Arnim’s tacit approval, ever-conscious as he was of the daily cost in supplies and fuel demanded by offensive operations, and who still retained overall command of all the assets used in Frühlingswind. Sbeïtla was taken by the Germans on February 17, after which Armin, rather than driving on, left 21. Panzer-Division in place and pulled 10. Panzer-Division northeast, back toward the Fondouk and Pichon passes.
